I had the chance to sample Ford’s 2009 F-150 earlier this week and, unfortunately, I can’t share my driving impressions with anyone at this time. But Ford just sent out a press release that announced the on-sale date for the new F-150 has been pushed back two months, just like the embargo date for our driving impressions.
Coincidence? Not in the slightest.
It’s no secret the F-150 is Ford’s biggest launch of the year. Historically, the F-series has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S., with the F-150 accounting for many of those sales.
However, that changed last month. For the first time in 17 years, a car actually outsold the F-series. Actually, four cars: the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord all outsold the fabled F-series in May. Ford clearly has a glut of 2008 F-150s languishing at dealers – a bad situation, given the 2009 F-150’s impending launch.
I still can’t tell you much about the 2009 truck, but it doesn’t take a genius to see why Ford stalled the launch. The folks in Dearborn are worried that potential customers could get behind the wheel of a 2009 F-150 first, and then no amount of cash on the hood would be able to move the remaining 2008s.
A slight improvement in the F-150 wouldn’t cause this problem, so you can imagine how the new F-150 compares to the current truck – even before I’m allowed to tell you about it.
