Ford is leveraging its loyal community of Mustang owners and fans for a new video series to celebrate the Ford Mustang’s 50th anniversary. Called “Ford Mustang Countdown,” the Ford-produced campaign is a weekly online series with episodes featuring different milestones and moments in Mustang history, starting with the 1962 debut of the Ford Mustang 1 Concept.
Mustang enthusiasts get their time in the spotlight as well, like filmmaker Zach King, who is the subject of one episode thanks to his short film featuring two radio-controlled Mustangs going on a car chase in a model city constructed by King. Other episodes so far include a look into the Ford archives to see materials from the entire spectrum of Mustang history, and another highlights the Flatrock, Michigan plant where Mustangs are currently built. On April 17, 2014, the Ford Mustang will have officially been in production for 50 consecutive years, and more than 9.2 million Mustangs have been produced since 1964.
For the 50th anniversary of the Mustang next year, there are also rumors of a limited-edition 2014.5 Ford Mustang which could debut prior to the redesign anticipated for the 2015 model year. The 2014 Ford Mustang starts at $22,995 with destination and is available in coupe and convertible models. Both of the current engine choices are expected to stick around for the Mustang’s redesign: a 305 hp, 3.7-liter V-6 and a 420 hp, 5.0-liter V-8.
