In 2008, Tata motors purchased Jaguar Land Rover from Ford for $2.3 billion with the British unit bleeding cash and looking for new models. Two years later the balance sheets still aren’t red, but we’ve learned the company has plans in place for 13 new models over the next five years.
First up on the platter is a revised Jaguar XF as the model is approaching four years old. It was stunning when it debuted, but is beginning to show its age now. To fix this, the car is said to be going under the knife for an “extensive” facelift. We are particularly fond of the XF, having named it an All Star two years running and loved our Four Seasons tester — when it was running — and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the model. In addition to the facelift, an XF Estate will join the sedan in 2012 — at least in Europe.
Next up is the oft-rumored, and now confirmed, small Jaguar sports coupe dubbed the XE. The car is due in 2013, along with two other Jaguar sports cars. It will strictly be a two-seat car based on a shortened XK platform and feature V-6 powerplants. It’s meant to compete against Porsche’s Boxster, but will be slightly more expensive than the Porsche. The two other XK sports cars due in 2013 are the XK and a high-performance version of the XK. The XK itself will follow the current 2+2 formula with a sleek coupe design and a soft-top convertible. The coupe will offer a number of engine options including a V-8, V-6, and possibly a turbocharged four-cylinder. The high-performance XK will ride on a shorter wheelbase for nimbler handling and be offered only as a V-8-powered R-model.
The following year, Jaguar intends to introduce its X-Type replacement to compete with BMW’s award winning 3 Series. Jag’s new entry-level model will be a sexy four-door coupe designed to make even the A5 Sportback look rather boring. Bodystyles, however, aren’t set in stone and Ian Callum’s design team at Jaguar is working on sedan, hatchback, and crossover models as well as a two-door shooting brake. Planned powertrains for the car include the Range Rover Evoque’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged, I-4 and 2.2-liter, turbo-diesel I-4 coupled to ZF’s eight-speed automatic transmission.
Further down the road in 2015, Jaguar has plans in place for the next-generation XF and a coupe version of the XE roadster. The new XF will switch to Jaguar’s aluminum-intensive premium lightweight architecture first introduced on the new XJ, but it will eventually underpin all Jaguar Land Rover products. The lightweight platform will provide an instant weight savings and fuel economy boost. Outside of this though, no firm plans are in place.
Jaguar’s sister-brand Land Rover is also set for some major changes in the future. One of those changes has already happened, with the new Range Rover Evoque. It’s the smallest, lightest, and most fuel efficient Range Rover model in the current lineup with more intentions of hitting the mall than the trail. It hits dealerships this summer.
In 2012, we’ll see an all-new Range Rover. It, like the next-generation XF, will ride on Jag’s premium lightweight architecture tailored for off-road use and abuse. One year later, the Range Rover Sport will debut, this time on the same chassis as the standard Range Rover rather than the larger, heavier Land Rover LR4 platform. Both models will be powered by a range of V-6 and V-8 engines and a diesel hybrid.
The product planners at Land Rover are currently looking at how to redefine the brand itself under Project Icon. One thing is for certain though, the company will produce a new Defender for 2015. It will ride on one of three platforms — a modified version of the existing LR4 platform, a stronger version of the LR2 platform, or a completely new platform. If a new platform is developed, it may be in conjunction with another company to cut costs or Land Rover may move models to the new platform eventually. When the new Defender goes on sale, it will offer three different wheelbases and up to six bodystyles to please all of its potential buyers.
