In case Chevrolet’s IndyCar drivers weren’t already riding high from last weekend’s Indy 500, during a plant visit to the General Motors facility in Detroit, Michigan, the racers got an exclusive look at the very first pre-production 2014 Cadillac ELR as it rolled off the assembly line.
Swiss driver Simona de Silvestro even got the chance the sit in the cockpit of pre-production ELR number one. de Silvestro is one of four female drivers competing in this year’s IZOD IndyCar series – the most ever – and races for KV Racing Technology in the number 78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy Dallara/Chevrolet car. She currently ranks 13th in the series, after a 17th place finish at last weekend’s Indianapolis 500.
These first pre-production Cadillac ELR coupes will be used to “validate manufacturing, engineering, and other quality measures,” according to GM. The actual purchasable ELRs won’t begin production until the end of this year, in preparation for the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) to go on sale next year. All Cadillac ELRs will be built alongside the Chevrolet Volt/Opel Ampera (with which the ELR shares much of its mechanicals), the Chevrolet Malibu, and the Chevrolet Impala at GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.
Powering the 2014 Cadillac ELR is a combination of an electric motor, a 1.4-liter gas engine, and a lithium-ion battery pack, which adds up to 207 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Cadillac estimates an eight-second 0-to-60-mph time, an electric range of about 35 miles, and a full gas/electric range of over 300 miles. Pricing has yet to be announced, but don’t be surprised to see the ELR’s price tag crest $70,000 once it goes on sale.
