The Jeep Renegade has hogged the FCA small crossover spotlight since its debut in Geneva, but now we have these spy shots to remind us of its sibling, the Fiat 500X. Both CUVs will be built on the same platform that underpins the 500L, and the 500X was revealed as being U.S.-bound in Fiat Chrysler’s five-year plan. It wasn’t clear from that document when it would arrive, but this prototype suggests it can’t be too far off.
The last time we saw a Fiat 500X test mule, it wore the body panels of the 500L. This time around, the crossover sports what appears to be its actual bodywork. Though we can’t see much through the thick camo, we can tell the roofline has more of a slope to it in the rear compared to the 500L. The prototype also rides higher than the 500L, though ground clearance isn’t nearly as generous as it is on its Jeep Renegade sibling. We got a look inside the prototype, but it mostly resembles a science experiment with wires and equipment blocking much of the center console. From what we can see, the Fiat 500X’s cabin looks like it will carry on the 500’s interior styling, with glossy plastic surfaces and a spherical shift knob. The infotainment system appears basic, comprised of a small screen flanked by two knobs.
Exact powertrains for the Fiat 500X are unknown, but the U.S.-spec Jeep Renegade will be powered by either a turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir I-4 making 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque or a 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 making 184 hp and 177 lb-ft. You can likely expect the Fiat version to get those same choices. The Renegade arrives later this year, and based on the completeness of this prototype, the Fiat 500X should arrive well after that.
