Ferrari Unveils One-off Superamerica 45 Ahead of Villa d’Este

Being a well-heeled Ferrari collector has its benefits: New York-based Ferrari fan Peter Kalikow commissioned the Italian company to build him this one-of-a-kind convertible, dubbed the Special Projects Ferrari Superamerica 45. It will bow at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza on Friday, May 20. After that, we imagine it will be consigned to a tightly-locked garage in New York.

Kalikow commissioned the car to celebrate the 45th anniversary of his first Ferrari purchase. Ferrari is somewhat tight-lipped about the car, but it’s clearly based on the brand’s 599 coupe. Although an earlier press release had said the car would carry a “6.0-liter six-cylinder engine,” we’re confident the car will retain the 6.0-liter V-12 of its 599 donor.

The most distinguishing feature of the Superamerica 45 is its carbon-fiber roof, which rotates to sit atop the trunklid, turning the car into a convertible. The carbon-fiber trunk lid and C-pillars are restyled versus the standard car, with Ferrari claiming the design tweaks reduce drag and improve rear downforce.

Out front, the A-pillars, door handles, and grille insert are all finished in brushed aluminum. The front fenders have dual scalloped air vents, which look remarkably like those found on a Chevrolet Corvette. The car is painted Blu Antille, a color chosen because it matches a 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica cabriolet in Kalikow’s collection. The sexy electric-blue hue also accents the five-spoke wheels.

Your eyes do not deceive you: the roof panel, front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser are all a slightly darker shade of blue than the rest of the car. The interior is finished in a mix of Cucio leather and BluScuro carbon-fiber trim, matching the exterior color.

If you’re not smitten with the looks of this car, Ferrari probably doesn’t care. A bespoke car like this need only suit the tastes of its creator — and we’d guess Peter Kalikow is pretty pleased with his new ride.
