Considering the most affordable Ferrari California starts at just over $200,000, you’d think Ferrari is already very exclusive, but the automaker has announced that sales will be reduced to under 7000 units this year.
Ferrari sold 7318 cars in 2012, but lowering that number would help keep the brand exclusive, explained Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo at a media event in Maranello.
“A Ferrari is like a beautiful woman, she must be worth waiting for and desired. I base my ideas on what I learned from Enzo Ferrari, if we produce less cars, we will not flood the market and it makes our used cars more desirable too,” di Montezemolo said.
While we understand Ferrari’s belief that quality beats quantity, we wonder whether the announcement may be partly inspired by other factors. Supercar sales are expected to slow down, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann told Automotive News. Lamborghini celebrated selling 2083 units last year, a 30-percent increase over 2011.
Other plans in Ferrari’s playbook include a major investment that consists of hiring 250 new workers, 200 of which will build engines for Maserati. Ferrari has the low-volume LaFerrari and F12 Berlinetta on the horizon, with the 458 Italia and all-wheel-drive FF a bit more affordable.
