Feature Flick: Watch a 2013 Ford Fusion Drive Off a Cliff in New Ad

Ford’s latest ad for the 2013 Fusion midsize sedan begins conventionally, with shots of the car driving down a winding two-lane road. Before long, though, the car steers off a cliff and as the car flies through the air, Ford provides some helpful text at the bottom of the screen that reads, “Cars cannot fly.”

Before the midsize sedan driver goes Evel Knievel, and veers off a twisting two-lane road, the commercial’s narrator rhetorically asks how advanced the new Fusion is. Before he can answer his own question, the Fusion turns off the road and leaps off a cliff. Thanks to the magic of CGI, the 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium actually made its big jump on a closed course, landing on a huge pile of cardboard boxes.

Should you ever find yourself driving a 2013 Ford Fusion on the winding road in the video below, you may really enjoy yourself. In our First Drive review, we said the Fusion may just have the best chassis in the field. “Not only does the Fusion turn in eagerly and resist body roll, but it also snubs body motion yet still takes the edge off bumps,” we wrote in the Fusion review. “It feels taut and European—though it was developed in the USA. Even the electric power steering in the 1.6-liter and the 2.0 feels very natural and direct.”

When the 2013 Ford Fusion in the ad eventually does hit the ground, we wonder if its IIHS Top Safety Pick status will be any help. Regardless, it’s another interesting way of getting attention in the ultra-competitive midsize segment. Will the new Fusion soar over others in the segment or crash out of the running? We’ll be watching the monthly sales numbers to find out — until then, watch the ad — as well as a behind-the-scenes making-of video — below.
