Feature Flick: Volkswagen Beetle Super Bowl Commercial Blends Dogs, Star Wars

Following up on the teaser video featuring a chorus of adorable barking canines, Volkswagen has released its full Super Bowl commercial ahead of this Sunday’s big game. The video previewed on YouTube will be cut down to just 60 seconds in length for the actual Super Bowl broadcast.

The new ad is called “The Dog Strikes Back”, and draws on both the dog theme of Volkswagen’s teaser commercial and the Star Wars-themed commercial the company aired during last year’s Super Bowl. In this spot, a chubby dog wants to run after a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, only to find that he can’t fit through the dog flap in his home’s front door. One solid exercise regime later, and the dog manages to squeeze through and pursue the red Beetle.

In the final few seconds of the commercial, Volkswagen once again draws upon the Star Wars franchise to show intergalactic characters, including Darth Vader, watching the ad in a bar. It’s a surprising twist to an otherwise cute and fun commercial.

Watch “The Dog Strikes Back” below, or see it Sunday, February 5, during the NFL Super Bowl.
