It’s not enough to add performance — the new Mini John Cooper Works GP also wears a series of striking visual upgrades to help it stand out from the rest of the Mini lineup. In this video, Mini design chief Anders Warming explains the unique touches that help make the John Cooper Works GP special.
In the video, Warming points out touches like the red front brake ducts and four-spoke wheels that help identify the new John Cooper Works GP from other Mini models. Special GP logos adorn the hood scoop, and are similarly present along the racing stripes on each door. Warming says that the carbon fiber rear wing and diffuser help provide more downforce, meaning the car “is perfect for going on the track.” Notice also that the rear wiper appears to have been deleted, presumably to save weight.
The Mini John Cooper Works GP was official revealed in May at a Mini festival in France. It reprises the name from a John Cooper Works GP model sold for the 2006 MINI Cooper. Though the company calls it “the fastest Mini ever”, we’ve yet to hear any engine performance figures. A video filmed at Germany’s ever-popular Nürburgring, however, reveals that the new Mini GP can lap the Nordschleife in just 8:23, about 19 seconds quicker than the old John Cooper Works GP. We expect the GP will be more powerful than the current Mini John Cooper Works model, which extracts 208 hp from a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four.
Mini says the new John Cooper Works GP will go into production this fall, with pricing to be announced later this summer. Just 2000 will be built, though it’s unknown how many will be brought to the U.S.
