Feature Flick: Tuning the Aerodynamics of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Chevrolet engineers spent many hours playing in the wind tunnel with the new Camaro ZL1. They wanted to make it the first performance car from General Motors to have zero-neutral lift or negative lift for world-class aerodynamics and handling.

GM engineers used a combination of computational fluid dynamics and two different wind tunnels to tune the air flow around the ZL1. Not only did they get the top-dog Camaro to slice through the air better; they also improved air flow to the brakes and cooling systems of the high-horsepower and higher-speed car. A front splitter, heat-extractor hood, side skirts, rear diffuser, rear spoiler, and many more pieces unique to the ZL1 to make it the best handling Camaro and one of the most aerodynamic cars in the General’s history.

In all, engineers spent 100 hours in the wind tunnel with the ZL1 — impressive, considering the basic Camaro form had already undergone a considerable amount of aero work in the first place.
