Using doors is so ordinary and boring. As this video shows, the coolest way to enter a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible is by skydiving and landing on the passenger seat.
This video, which is part of a new Volkswagen marketing campaign called As Sun As Possible (ASAP), features a skydiver who leaps out of an airplane above Hawaii. Far below, a driver gets the Beetle convertible up to speed — with the roof lowered and passenger seat reclined — ready to greet its falling passenger. While we’d recommend leaving this stunt to the professionals, it’s certainly the most exhilarating way to enter the Beetle convertible.
The As Sun As Possible campaign consists of a website with six participants — photographers, bloggers, musicians, and more — taking part in outdoorsy activities around Hawaii. The adventures, like rock climbing or learning to surf, unsurprisingly, always involve the team driving Volkswagen Beetle convertibles around the island.
As the video below explains, those opportunities are also open to the general public. Anyone can enter a contest by uploading an original photo that they think embodies the “As Sun As Possible” spirit demonstrated by Volkswagen’s campaign. The winner and a friend will fly to Oahu, Hawaii to borrow a 2013 Volkswagen Beetle convertible to enjoy what the company calls, “the sunniest road trip ever.”
Volkswagen didn’t specify which engine will be in the Beetle convertible offered to contest winners, but there are three choices. A convertible with the base 170-hp, 2.5-liter inline-five engine starts at $25,790 after a $795 destination charge. Upgrading to the Beetle TDI convertible and its 140-hp, 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine requires $28,690, while the $28,590 Beetle Turbo convertible packs a 200-hp punch from a 2.0-liter turbo-four gas engine.
