Feature Flick: Porsche Teaser Shows 2012 911 in South Africa

Like kids eyeing Christmas presents under the tree, we can’t wait for Porsche to fully unveil the 2012 911. Fortunately Porsche is keeping us excited with this new teaser video of the next-generation Porsche 911, known internally as the 991 model.

In the video, Porsche gives us a glimpse at hot-weather and final validation testing conducted in South Africa. We get to see and hear the new 911 under power blasting down closed roads as engineers put the finishing touches on the car. The video also gives us a better look inside the car, which houses a new, taller center console reminiscent of that in the Porsche Panamera.

Other juicy tidbits on display in the video include the 911 convertible (with its fabric roof up), and a quick glance at the shift knob for the 911’s optional seven-speed manual transmission.

We’ll still have to wait until the Frankfurt Motor Show this September for the 911’s official debut, but here’s what we know so far: the 991 911 grows slightly, providing more interior space. At the same time, the wheelbase expands to shorten the car’s front and rear overhands. In spite of the expansion and addition of more technology, the new 911 will be a tad lighter than its predecessor, thanks to a generous smattering of lightweight aluminum and magnesium.

Power in the base Carrera model will come from a 3.4-liter flat-six, rated at 350 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. The faster Carrera S has a 3.8-liter flat-six with 400 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. New drivetrain technology includes a special electronically controlled limited-slip differential in cars equipped with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

With just a few months left until Porsche pulls the wraps off the latest in a long line of iconic 911s, we can’t wait to see the finished product. Watch the video below to satisfy your Porsche 911 craving until the car’s official debut this fall.
