The new 991-generation Porsche 911 is perhaps the most controversial entry in the series yet, as it represents a gain in dimensions as well as a shift toward Porsche’s new electro-mechanical steering setup. Porsche-philes everywhere have debated the implications of these changes, but is there really all that much to get upset about? Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago gets behind the wheel of a 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet to find out.
In Carrera S trim, the new 911 makes 400 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque from its 3.8-liter flat-six engine. Though the car adds nearly four inches to its wheelbase and two inches to its overall length, weight has actually been reduced from the previous model. As a result of the increased dimensions, the engine now sits further inside the car, which helps to improve handling. After a brief rundown of the changes made from the last generation, associate road test editor Carlos Lago takes the Porsche to the track to run it through a variety of tests.
During acceleration runs, Lago comments that the Carrera S might hit 60 mph before you can say the full name of Porsche’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, Porsche Doppelkuplungsgetriebe (or PDK). If the car’s 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds doesn’t impress you, the Carrera S also completes the quarter-mile in 12.1 seconds at 116.0 mph.
