Feature Flick: Look, No Hands! BMW Shows Off its Driverless Car

We never expected BMW to try and compete with Google, but it seems the automaker’s ConnectedDrive Connect (CDC) system is following in the footsteps of Google’s self-driving car.
In the video below, you can see BMW engineers take their hands off the wheel while the car drives itself on the Autobahn, all while adhering  to all driving laws and speed limits. Dr. Nico Kaempchen, Project Manager for the semi-autonomous car, says it has successfully driven on its own for about 3100 miles on the freeway, and that this new technology will be used to further improve existing assistance systems in BMW cars. But we wouldn’t be surprised to see this car in the near future to challenge Google’s self-driving car.
In 2010, Google began testing a self-driving Toyota Prius, which uses a sensor system similar to the one in BMW’s CDC, but before that, driverless cars have been tested at least as far back as 1977.
