Feature Flick: Learning to Sand Crawl in a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

After teaching an automotive rookie how to drive a stick and do donuts, Motor Trend’s Jessi Lang heads to the dune for a lesson in sand crawling behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. Lang’s teacher for the day is off-road veteran David Hamilton.

For lessons, the duo head to Pismo Beach, which has 1500 acres of coastal sand dunes. Hamilton teaches Lang how to tackle Pismo’s largest bowls and, after learning the ropes, Lang takes the wheel to test her skills. Next they attempt to make it through the whoops without destroying the Jeep. Whoops are bumps kicked up in the sand by vehicle tires and are spaced about the distance of the vehicle.
