Feature Flick: Learn Spanish With the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI

Volkswagen is on a roll with its commercials for the all-new 2012 Passat. Without the help of a tiny Darth Vader, the latest spot highlights the Passat TDI’s range – a claimed 795 miles per tank – and shows what’s possible on a road trip when you don’t have to stop so many times to fill up.

Two friends about to embark on a road trip in their turbodiesel Passat are deciding what to listen to on their journey. The driver chooses to put on “Learning Spanish in the Car,” despite his passenger’s reluctance to learn the language. An appropriately southwestern-sounding track featuring a guitar and whistling plays in the background as the two friends hit the open road.

Once the Passat finally pulls up to a gas station, the pair emerges from their diesel-sipping VW. Now apparently a fluent Spanish-speaker, one friend complains about the musicless 13-hour trip. The commercial ends with a narrator stating the Passat TDI’s 795-mile potential range. VW’s numbers are based on a manual transmission-equipped model with an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 43 mpg, compared to the automatic model’s 40-mpg highway rating—though all models get the 18.5-gallon fuel tank also listed in the fine print.

It may not be quite as humorous without Little Vader, but the commercial makes us chuckle while also succeeding in getting its point across.
