Who better to star in a Chinese advertising campaign for the smart fortwo than L.A. Lakers player Kobe Bryant? Well, perhaps homegrown NBA star Yao Ming, but it was Kobe who got a gig to help shill Smarts in China.
This lighthearted video highlights the benefits of the Brabus Smart Fortwo’s compact size in a crowded urban environment — not easy parking, but running down criminals. A mute Kobe helps catch an art thief in a busy city, a feat enabled in part by the Fortwo’s petite dimensions. Speaking of which, the fact that a six-foot-six NBA player can even fit inside a Fortwo was news to us.
The ad is part of a new campaign called “Big, in the city,” which will see the Lakers star help promote Smart products throughout China. The brand was launched in China in 2009 and sold over 4000 cars there last year. Will an ad campaign starring an American basketball player help Smart sell its wares in China?
