It’s one of the most popular vehicles on enthusiast forums and blogs for desk jockeys to proclaim the best performance car available, and from a purely objective standpoint, there’s no question the 2014 Nissan GT-R delivers. With 545 hp, 0-60 in less than three seconds, and maximum grip well above 1 g, the performance specs on the GT-R put it in the company of some of the most elite performance machinery in the world. But do the numbers accurately convey the driving experience, which some have described as overly-managed by technology, lacking the essential soul of the European thoroughbreds? Justin Bell takes Japan’s supercar to the track to find out.
In terms of objective performance, Bell acknowledges that the GT-R delivers without a doubt, with a scorching 2.7-second 0-60 time. But the GT-R’s somewhat ponderous mass and all-wheel-drive system manifest themselves in excessive initial understeer, which turns Bell off. But once he gets used to the character of the car, its capabilities, and its handling and power sweet spots, he appreciates its formidable capabilities.
However, Bell is let down by the GT-R’s flat engine note, and the fact that it’s all-wheel-drive system is obvious and ever-present, unlike the Audi R8 he recently drove that felt like a rear-drive car with occasional help from the front wheels.
