Honda will advertise the new 2012 CR-V during this weekend’s Super Bowl with a commercial inspired by 1986 comedy film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The clip shows a modern-day Matthew Broderick, who played Bueller in the original movie, skipping work to drive a Honda CR-V.
In the lengthy commercial, Broderick calls his agent to say he’s too sick to act — just like how Bueller fakes a cold to play truant from school in the 1986 original. Broderick’s day of relaxation includes multiple remakes of scenes from Day Off, including a quick snippet in which a valet takes the Honda CR-V for a daring joy ride.
After the commercial airs during the Super Bowl, Honda will show a 30-second version of the spot through the spring. According to Automotive News, Honda designed the Bueller-themed ad to draw buyers into dealerships in ordered to rebound sales. Last year, Honda’s sales suffered after the company’s vehicle production slowed in the wake of Japan’s natural disasters.
Luxury division Acura also will air a Super Bowl commercial for the NSX supercar, which bowed in concept form at the Detroit auto show. The clip will reportedly feature comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno trying to snag the keys to the Acura NSX from the car’s first paying customer. Eventually, the customer relents when offered a ride down a zip-line through Manhattan.
