While the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray introduces bold new design elements to the popular sports car, C7 exterior design manager Kirk Bennion ties the new look to previous generations on this episode of Hot Rod Unlimited. The video shows how the Corvette’s design has progressed from the C1 concept to the new 2014 Corvette Stingray.
With the popularity of the original Corvette concept shown at the 1953 Motorama, GM began production of the sports car that same year. The 1953 Corvette is recognized by its short front overhang, forward facing grille, and integrated headlights. While all C1 Corvettes are convertibles, hardtop models featured a rear quarter window – a design element that wouldn’t return until the new C7 model. Inspired by the 1959 Sting Ray race car, the C2 Corvette arrived in 1963 with an independent rear suspension and hide-away headlights. While the C3 Corvette debuted in 1968, Bennion says the 1978 Corvette was the first model to incorporate aerodynamics as part of the car’s design.
The C4 Corvette arrived in the 1980s with a radical improvement in aerodynamics and steering as well as larger brakes and wheels and tires. In 1997, the C5 Corvette received an all-new frame, modern aluminum small-block V-8, and rear-mounted transmission. Integrated headlights returned with the C6 Corvette, while the ZR1 became the fastest and most powerful model to date.
