Feature Flick: Chrysler Super Bowl Ad Tells America It’s Only Halftime

The “Imported From Detroit” ad from last year’s Super Bowl XLV proved quite successful for Chrysler. This year, the now Italian-owned automaker has taken a slightly different tack with its latest ad: it’s only halftime, and it – and the U.S. – still has plenty of time to get back on its feet.

The new ad is narrated by Clint Eastwood, who delivers a raspy monologue on how Detroit — and America — still has plenty of time to get back on its feet for recovery. Eastwood says “this country can’t be knocked out with one punch; we get right back up again. And when we do, the world is going to hear the roar of our engines.” He goes on to tell us that the country should look to Detroit as an example of how to get back after taking a hit.

It’s not actually until halfway through the two-minute, two-second-long commercial that any of Chrysler vehicles are shown. What we see are hard-working Americans – a dad in a Dodge Challenger dropping his son at school, a mother driving her daughter in a Jeep Wrangler, and construction workers loading up a Ram pickup. As the footage pans across a line of freshly-made Jeep Grand Cherokees at their factory, Eastwood says, “Detroit’s showing us it can be done. And, what’s true about them is true about all of us.”
