Feature Flick: Camaro Passenger Receives Airbag Burn While Drifting

We saw the Chevrolet Camaro perform all sorts of outlandish stunts in the Transformers movies, but it may be unwise to replicate such antics in the real world. Though sports cars like the Camaro are designed to be driven hard, the unfortunate driver and passenger in this video found that every car has limits.

While putting on a drifting show for spectators at Milan Dragway in Michigan, driver Paul Beiswenger and his female passenger seemed to be having a grand old time until the Camaro’s side airbags spontaneously deployed. The sound of burning rubber stops after the loud pop, but the impact didn’t seem too bad as the driver was able to steer and stop the Camaro off to the side. The woman in the passenger seat suffered only a minor burn from the airbags.

The car didn’t hit anything, so it’s unclear what caused the airbags to detonate. One possibility is that high G-forces from the repeated donuts triggered the side-impact sensors. Why do you think the airbags deployed? Share your theories in the comments section below.
