Feature Flick: Cadillac Designers Discuss Ciel Concept

The gorgeous, retro-inspired Cadillac Ciel concept was one of the most stunning debuts at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance last week. To give us an in-depth understanding of the car’s styling and design themes, Cadillac has released this video with commentary from the Ciel concept’s designers.
General Motors exterior design manager Niki Smart explains how the Ciel’s vertical headlight arrangement is mirror by vertical, fin-like taillights at the back of the car, noting that much of the Ciel’s inspiration came from historical Cadillac models.“We’re always trying to maintain that kind of bold swagger that Cadillac is really known for,” Smart said.
Interior design manger Gael Buzyn, meanwhile, points to the hand-built leather and wood interior trim. He says the beautiful, art deco-like interior was supposed to be attractive without distracting the driver. But above all, the goal of the Ciel concept was to celebrate the joy of an open-top driving experience. “It’s all about the sky,you are part of the surrounding, part of the landscape,” Buzyn said. “We’ve created a Cadillac that lets you touch the sky.”
In addition to the design commentary, this video shows the Ciel concept running along beautiful coastal roads and wending its way through tree-lined avenues. If this footage doesn’t make you fall in love with the four-door convertible’s elegant design, perhaps nothing will. So far there are no plans to put the Ciel concept into production, but Cadillac promises the car portends “a new chapter in Cadillac’s design.”
