As we expected, Bentley appears to be putting the finishing touches on a new V-8 engine for the 2012 model year. These teaser videos give us a sneak peek — and early listen — to the new powerplant installed in a Bentley Continental GT.
Bentley says the “stirring and thunderous soundtrack” heard in this video portends a new, exciting driving experience from the company’s new products. Though it’s hard to tell through the murky, faux-documentary teaser video, we believe the rumbling V-8 is installed in a Continental GT. Bentley also released a sound clip of the new engine idling, revving, and accelerating.
We had previously heard that Bentley would use the Conti GT to launch its new 4.0-liter V-8. The engine will have either one or two turbochargers, with output estimated to reach anywhere from 505 to 555 hp. The current Continental GT uses a twin-turbo, 6.0-liter W-12 engine good for 567 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Reports also suggest the new 4.0-liter engine will mate to Audi’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, replacing the six-speed automatic currently used in the Continental GT.
The idea behind downsizing, of course, is to help Bentley drastically improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle emissions across its portfolio. Based on what we can hear in these teaser videos, the new V-8 will sound fantastic. We should learn more about the new engine, including outputs and economy ratings, in the next few months.
