Feature Flick: Alonso Drives The Ferrari LaFerrari

Alonso drives the top Ferrari.

Before heading to the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso stopped off at the company’s Fiorano test circuit to try out the 2014 Ferrari LaFerrari hypercar. Tough life, huh? Lucky for us, Ferrari filmed the ordeal.

Ferrari says that Alonso, as well as teammate Felipe Massa, were instrumental in helping develop the LaFerrari. Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, the Ferrari LaFerrari is the company’s first-ever hybrid. A pair of electric motors draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack and produces as much as 161 hp of assistance. The 6.3-liter V-12 engine produces 789 hp on its own, so combined the LaFerrari’s hybrid powertrain boasts a whopping 951 hp. That, Ferrari claims, is enough for a 0-to-62-mph time below three seconds.

In this video, Alonso doesn’t look to be setting a serious lap time — he’s not wearing a helmet, for instance — but the LaFerrari does hold the fastest lap time of any Ferrari road car at Fiorano. Its 1:20 lap is five seconds faster than the time set by the erstwhile Enzo supercar, and three seconds quicker than the time recorded by today’s Ferrari F12berlinetta.

The Ferrari LaFerrari seen in this video has its carbon-fiber bodywork covered by camouflage tape, but we can still see the clever shapes that are engineered to provide the optimum balance between aerodynamic downforce and drag. The car’s interior is uncovered, revealing a straightforward dashboard with a D-shaped steering wheel and abundant exposed carbon fiber.

Even though the Ferrari LaFerrari is a hybrid, it still sounds like a potent Italian supercar when driven in anger on the Fiorano test track. Watch the video below to listen for yourself.
