Feature Flick: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Hits the Track

The newest AMG model is more of a pocket rocket than you might think.

This week on Ignition, host Carlos Lago takes the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG out on the track to see if the performance of this pocket rocket lives up to the reputation of the AMG name. As the most powerful four-cylinder production car ever, the 355 hp CLA45 AMG puts up some impressive numbers and makes a distinctive noise to boot.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG employs the first-ever four-cylinder engine from AMG, and it’s a screamer. The 2.0-liter, turbocharged powerplant makes 177 horsepower-per-liter and mates with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox and all-wheel-drive. Lago also points out that the CLA45 AMG’s engine offers something that can’t be found in its competitors: an AMG technician’s signature certifying the hand-built production process. This special engine runs the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, meaning that this baby AMG rivals much more powerful and expensive AMG models.

The engine isn’t the only special aspect of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45AMG, though, as Carlos compares the overall demeanor of the CLA45 AMG to a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, but classier. The four-wheel-drive system in combination with the high-strung turbocharged engine make for an exciting driving experience, and the CLA45 AMG really gets moving around the track.
