Feature Flick: 2014 Mazda6’s Gets a Shadowy Tease

The description of this YouTube video is very clear: “This is not the Takeri concept car, it is the first glimpse of the all-new 2014 Mazda6 and the similarities are definitely intentional.”

Despite being just 21 seconds long and showing more shadows than car, this is our first official glimpse at the upcoming 2014 Mazda6. Eagle-eyed viewers will spot the only two noticeable differences between this car and the Takeri concept (also pictured below) – a lens over the headlight and a pop-up headlight washer jet. There was minimal change in the transformation from the Minagi concept into the CX-5, so we doubt there will be much design change from the Takeri into the 2014 Mazda6.

Back in April, at the New York auto show, Mazda detailed what we can expect from its new midsize sedan – one thing we can’t expect will be a V-6 powertrain. The 2014 Mazda6’s engine portfolio will be composed only of four-cylinders, much like its Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Chevrolet Malibu, and Ford Fusion competitors. Mazda has yet to specify what engine will go into the new 6, other than saying that it will be a Skyactiv-G unit; our bet is that we’ll see the same 155-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s found in the CX-5 and Mazda3. Enthusiasts will be in luck, too, as the automaker confirmed that the 2014 model will be available with both six-speed automatic and manual transmissions.

The 2014 Mazda6 has a lot weighing on its shoulders, as the small car company has been struggling to make ends meet. The Mazda3 currently trails the entire compact car class (it sold just 59,527 units so far this year); however, the new 2013 CX-5 crossover has been flying off dealership lots (16,031 sold since it went on sale in late February). Hopefully the high style of Mazda’s new flagship sedan will help fill the company’s coffers.

Until the 2014 Mazda6 makes its official debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, check out the teaser video below.
