The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb is one of the most diverse car racing events in the country, if not the world, bringing everything from radically-modified, unlimited-class cars, to nearly-stock vehicles with nothing more than just the mandated safety equipment. Although Sebastien Loeb got the headlines this year in his unlimited-class Peugeot, Lexus also fielded a contender in the form of the IS F CCS-R. Justin Bell asked to pilot the race car up to the peak once again, and Lexus politely declined, but offered a 2014 IS350 F Sport.
Until recently, the Lexus brand was not exactly known as an edge-of-the-seat enthusiast brand, but the efforts the brand put into its ultra-exclusive LFA showed that it was capable of producing a bona fide performance car. The trickle-down effect of the LFA has manifested itself in the company’s more mainstream products, with the IS350 F Sport being one of the latest examples. Bell notes the ample power of the car’s 3.5-liter V-6, even in the high altitude, and says he can feel the LFA influence in Lexus’ mainstream sport sedan.
Although it wasn’t a pedal-to-the-metal run up to the peak, Bell said driving the length of the Pikes Peak road gave him a better appreciation of what it takes to compete in the Hillclimb.
