There was no question it would be “game on” between the Camaro and Mustang when the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was unveiled. Unlike some of its recent forebears which brought to mind mullets, tank tops and hard rock, the latest iteration of the legendary nameplate is purpose-built to be a ferocious track car. The Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca was hailed for its capabilities when it was introduced, but Chevy is looking to take down Ford’s track-bred pony, and according to the Camaro’s chief engineer, the Z/28 does, by a substantial margin.
Considering the source of the video is Chevrolet, some might say the results are suspect, but typically in testing, every reasonable measure is taken to ensure the comparison and conditions are as apples-to-apples as possible. Anticipating the Ford fanboys’ angry feedback already, Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Chevrolet Camaro, answers the question why the Boss 302 was selected over the substantially more powerful Shelby GT 500, by saying that in testing, the Boss is the fastest Mustang around the track, and made for the most logical competitor for the Z/28.
Among the advantages the Z/28 has over the Boss is 61 more horsepower, 101 lb-ft more torque, the aforementioned carbon ceramic brakes, and of course, four-wheel independent suspension, something the 2015 Mustang will finally have standard across-the-board. Oppenheiser says the Z/28 is about four seconds faster than the Boss 302, but he’s not content just trouncing Chevy’s cross-town rival, with the Porsche 911 GT3 and Nissan GT-R in the development team’s sights.
