The long-anticipated 2013 Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twin are about to hit showrooms, and everyone wants to know if the cars live up to expectations. We have found two feature flicks that give us hope that the new sports cars will herald in a new era of fun-to-drive motoring.
The Scion FR-S (and its Subaru BRZ twin) will set the standard other automakers use to justify building inexpensive, rear-drive sports coupes. Lago was impressed by the numbers put down by the FR-S despite having only 200 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. The car’s power-to-weight ratio landed it in the thick of other similarly priced sporty cars such as the Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen GTI—not bad company. The shifter also impressed with its slick-shifting and precise nature.
The FR-S’ chassis can provide sideways fun on the same tires fitted to the Toyota Prius. Lago was impressed by the FR-S, saying that even though it won’t be the fastest car around the track; no other car in its price range is as much fun except maybe the Mazda Miata.
Motor Trend’s Carlos Lago takes an orange FR-S to the track for some testing before carving some canyons on the latest episode of Ignition. After carving the canyons and getting the numbers Lago handed the FR-S keys over to professional racer Randy Pobst at Streets of Willow.
