In a bit of friendly drag racing between drivers, renowned drag instructor Roy Hill races Global Rally Cross (GRC) champion Tanner Foust in an unlikely matchup at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s zMAXDragway. Hill, behind the wheel of a 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet, faces off against Foust and his rally-ready GRC Ford Fiesta ST. The results are surprisingly close.
The Mustang Cobra Jet, which is specially made for drag racing, is powered by a hefty 5.0-liter V-8 as well as a 2.9-liter Ford Racing-built Whipple supercharger. Along with a thunderous amount of power to the rear wheels that can send the front end clear off the ground at launch, Hill is also quite pleased with the Mustang Cobra Jet’s power windows.
While certainly lacking the Mustang’s displacement numbers, Foust’s all-wheel drive 2.0-liter 550-plus-hp Ford Fiesta ST is about as fearsome as any hot hatch out there. With staggering thrust from its huge turbo and custom-ratio sequential gearbox, Foust and his team won three straight GRC championships with this Fiesta ST between 2011 and 2013 — but will that matter out here on the pavement?
Check out the full video below to see the race between the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and Ford Fiesta ST, as well as some entertaining ribbing and banter between the two drivers. We’ll stay tuned in case Ford Racing follows up with sequel video that turns the tables, provided that Hill ever lets his precious Mustang Cobra Jet get a little muddy.
