Last time our colleagues at Motor Trend tested a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, they were less than complimentary. In reference to its sledgehammer engine and unpredictable handling, the MT staff likened the SLS AMG to an American muscle car — lots of power, little grip. Now that Mercedes has reworked the car to produce the SLS AMG GT, associate road test editor Carlos Lago decided to see whether the big Mercedes is any better to drive.
The first change for the 2013 SLS AMG GT concerned upgrading the 6.2-liter V-8 engine to produce 583 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. While Lago’s testing found that didn’t make the car significantly quicker, a 3.7-second 0-to-60-mph time isn’t anything to be sniffed at. Big changes were also applied to the chassis, where spring and dampers have stronger rates. And Mercedes made the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission shift even more quickly than before.
After some time setting numbers at the test track, Lago headed out to the Streets of Willow racetrack to record lap times. There’s no denying he’s smitten with the thunderous, powerful V-8 engine, but will Lago find the Mercedes SLS AMG GT easier to drive quickly than its SLS AMG predecessor? That depends on whether there is more grip available, or whether the car remains a powerslide-happy sledgehammer.
