The 2013 Cadillac ATS is the rookie of the luxury sport sedan segment, and as such it needs to be put to the test. It’s already been pitted against the BMW 3 Series in a Head 2 Head episode, but before it can be further matched up against the competition, Motor Trend associate road test editor Carlos Lago wants to find out how the car is on its own.
The ATS gets three engine choices (2.5-liter I-4, 2.0-liter turbo I-4, and 3.6-liter V-6), and Lago tests out the turbocharged version for this episode, which puts out 272 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That amount of power translates to 6.0 seconds in the 0-60 mph sprint, and 14.4 seconds in the quarter mile. Thanks to a set of sticky tires, the ATS halts to a stop from 60-0 mph in 108 ft. Equipped with the sport suspension package, the ATS makes its way around the figure eight with finesse. While it doesn’t disappoint, there are some things Lago has issues with.
While tossing the car around on the track is fun, Lago recognizes most ATS drivers will spend their time commuting and going for canyon runs. He takes the ATS for a spin on twisty roads, where he has a second chance to discover how the ATS performs. Check out the video below see how the ATS stacks up.
