Infiniti floored the audience with its hybrid Essence concept at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Since then, design cues from the stunning concept have been making their way into the brand production cars and the next-generation G37 coupe, due sometime in 2012, will bear more than a passing resemblance to the Essance.
According to Motor Trend, the next-generation G37 coupe will reportedly ride on a shortened wheelbase, but will be lower, longer, and wider than the current car. The wheelbase is said to be 110 inches long compared to the current car’s 112-inch wheelbase, while the overall dimensions become 186 x 77 x 52 inches.
As previewed in the Essence, the G coupe could be offered with a hybrid powertrain, although not the incredible 592-horsepower setup in the Essence concept. Motor Trend suggests that the hybrid powertrain used in the M35 Hybrid will find its way under the hood. Total output from the system, which uses a 3.5-liter V-6 paired with an electric motor, is approximately 360 horsepower. Other reports suggest the recent partnership between Renault-Nissan and Daimler could lead to a diesel hybrid system, but possibly only for markets outside North America.
