Esprit Redux? Lotus Hints At New Esprit for 2010 Paris Show

The hints just keep on coming. Last month, Lotus Cars issued a cryptic teaser image and a release that claimed a “dawn of a new era” would occur at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. A second release, issued by the British sports car manufacturer earlier today, suggests “new era” may actually be the new Esprit.

We’ve long heard that Lotus was wrenching on a successor to its legendary Esprit, but this release seems to solidify rumors that the new car will launch en Paris. Lotus uses a handful of paragraphs to hint that the original Esprit launched 35 years ago at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, and that something breathtaking will also occur at this year’s Paris show.

“Perhaps a new Esprit,” the automaker teases. “Perhaps not. Or perhaps [something] even more?”

Certainly, expect the new sports car — whatever its name may be — to be much more luxurious than the last Esprit. Corporate executives have indicated they’d like to push Lotus upmarket, allowing it to compete against premium supercar brands like Aston Martin and Ferrari.

Although we can speculate about the finite details of the car, we’ll have to wait until the Paris show to know exactly what the folks in Hethel have planned. Until that stage, we’ll turn the question to you — what should Lotus focus on for its Esprit successor? Power? Speed? Luxury? All of the above?
