eBay Motors has been around for more than a decade, and has become a destination site for car buyers and enthusiasts for the purchase of vehicles and accessories. But the experience was primarily transactional, between buyer and seller. With the creation of eBay Garage, the company is seeking to make the experience much more social and interactive. The new community seems to be off to a strong start, with eBay Garage already having more than two million vehicle profiles.
eBay Garage allows users to showcase and share their vehicles, connect to other enthusiasts, assign custom hashtags to categorize their vehicles, add favorites, and allow user comments and questions on vehicle profiles. eBay Garage also includes an iPhone mobile app that allows profile management, the addition of new vehicles, and the ability to shop for parts. The app also includes a VIN scanner for one-step uploading of their vehicles specifications.
In the works, but not yet launched, is a vehicle configurator function, which would allow users to see what their vehicle would look like with parts and accessories installed. Tire Rack, a prominent tire and wheel online retailer, offers a similar function to preview the look of wheels on cars. You can check out eBay Garage at http://www.ebay.com/motors/garage.
