Earthquake Impact: Honda, Toyota, and Nissan Updates

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan has had an international impact on the automotive industry. What follows are the latest updates we have from Toyota, Honda, and Nissan.

-Toyota plans to resume production of the Prius, Lexus CT 200h, and Lexus HS 250h on March 28.

-A week ago, Toyota restarted production of replacement parts. Three days ago, the automaker reopened some plants that make parts for overseas production.

-The launch of the new Prius MPV has been delayed.

-Honda reports that most suppliers are ready or are almost ready to resume production. Until all are ready, Honda is helping suppliers prepare for production and trying to find other sources for those parts.

-Production at the Sayama Plant and Suzuka Factory will be suspended until April 3. Hondas made in Japan include the U.S. Fit, Insight, CR-Z, Civic Hybrid, Acura TSX, and Acura RL.

-“Honda will make decisions based on the recovery of Japanese society as a whole as well as the supply of parts,” a Honda press release states.

-Nissan Americas manufacturing operations will follow a normal production schedule through at least April 1.

Nissan Leaf production resumes today, though the automaker notes that “the ability to sustain production will depend to a large degree on the frequency of rolling blackouts due to electricity shortages.”

-Nissan is considering the possibility of having its Tennessee engine plant increase production of VQ V-6 engines. The V-6s may be shipped to Japan to compensate for lost production at the company’s Iwaki engine plant, halfway between Tokyo and Sendai, where earthquake and tsunami damage was most severe.

-Nissan and Infiniti dealers are being told that May ordering will follow a normal schedule.
