Vanilla Reign: DuPont Says White is World’s Most Popular Car Color

In its annual Color Popularity Report, DuPont named white the world’s most popular automotive color for 2012, with black and silver in second and third place, respectively. White/white pearl garnered a 23-percent vote, while black scored 21 percent, and silver making up 18 percent of cars sold worldwide.
In 2012, Europe joins North America (U.S. and Canada), Japan, South Korea, Russia, South Africa, and Mexico as a country where white is the most popular car color. White has gained popularity over the past decade with the introduction of pearlescent shades that give the color a more upscale look. In China, black/black effect is the most popular color, while silver took top honors in South America, Brazil, and India. Black is seen as a luxury symbol in many markets, while silver became popular between 2000 and 2006 during the digital age.
Gray, red, and brown/beige each gained one percentage point compared to last year. Blue maintained its rankings from last year.
Color popularity in North America mirrored that of the worldwide stage, with white in the lead at 24 percent. White was the most popular color on compact SUVs and trucks. Though it came in second-place overall at 19 percent, black was the most popular color for midsize crossovers and luxury SUV segments. Silver earned the third place spot at 16 percent, but didn’t lead any segment. In Europe, the pattern for first and second place is repeated, with white again finishing before black. Gray narrowly beat out silver for third place at 15 percent, while Blue increased to 8 percent of the European market.
