DSG Rig: Mitsubishi Fuso Launches Dual Clutch Transmission For Commercial Trucks

The Lancer Ralliart and Evolution aren’t the only Mitsubishi-badged vehicles to offer a dual-clutch transmission. Interestingly, the new medium-duty Mitsubishi Fuso Canter cabover also receives a dual-clutch transmission, which the company claims is a segment first.

Daimler — which technically owns the Mitsubishi Fuso line — claims it is the first application of a dual-clutch transmission in a medium-duty truck. The advantages of the new dual-clutch transmission include lower fuel consumption, reduced wear on auxiliary equipment, increased payload, longer transmission service intervals, and lower maintenance costs. Daimler says it gives drivers the convenience of an automatic, and the economy of a manual transmission.

The electronically-controlled Duonic has six mechanical forward gears and two hydraulic wet clutches. One clutch is used for odd-numbered gears and the other clutch handles the even gears. This arrangement allows for quicker and smoother shifts compared to conventional manual or torque converter-equipped automatic transmissions. Just like the aforementioned transmissions, the Duonic can be manually shifted by the driver if so desired.

Other upgrades to the work truck include an independent front suspension for 3.5-ton models to improve ride and handling; Electronic Stability Program (ESP) on heavier models; and a redesigned cab for better comfort. The new Canter will go on sale in Europe next October, but these same upgrades are expected to port over to U.S.-spec models around the same time.
