Driven: 2010 Jaguar XFR

This time, Jaguar doesn’t need to make any excuses for its entry in the high-performance luxury sedan category. The 2010 Jaguar XFR is good enough to take on the Germans.

I’m sitting at the airport in Seville, Spain, where I’ve just driven the 2010 Jaguar XFR high-performance luxury sedan. We´ll have complete driving impressions in a couple of days, but for now, I can tell you that this is a pretty spectacular car. The XF, as you may know, replaced the S-type, and the S-type R, although a nice enough car, trailed the last-generation BMW M5 (V8 model) and the contemporary Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG by a wide margin both in specification and overall performance. This time, Jaguar got it right: the supercharged XFR has a brilliant new V8 engine that churns out more than 500 hp, and the car strikes the seemingly impossible balance of being extremely fast and extremely composed without sacrificing everyday drivability or comfort. Unlike the current, V10 M5, the XFR is a car anyone can get into, figure out the controls, and drive easily, yet it will behave like the world-class sport sedan that it is in the hands of a keen driver.

I also drove the new 2010 Jaguar XKR coupe and convertible, powered by the same new supercharged V8, and they, too, are really, really good. More on them soon. I have a flight to catch.
