Double Down: Dodge Increases 2010 Viper ACR-X Production to 50 Cars

Yes, we know the official party line was that production of the track-tuned 2010 Dodge Viper ACR-X would be limited to 25 cars. That said, corporate officials did hint another 25 cars could be built if demand was high. Demand, it seems, certainly was. Racers and Viper collectors jumped at the chance to buy an ACR-X, and Dodge officially upped ACR-X production to 50 cars in total.

Each ACR-X entered life as a standard Viper ACR coupe, and was built (before production recently ceased) at Chrysler’s Conner Avenue facility in Detroit, Michigan. From there, the cars were sent off to Roush Industries, which was tasked with the transformation into the race-ready ACR-X. Roush disassembles the car, allowing it to add an eight-point roll cage, fire system, window nets, race seat, fuel cell, and upgraded brakes.

Missed out on the extended production run? You won’t be completely deprived of the ACR-X fun. Dodge built the ACR-X for its new one-make race series — the Viper Cup Series — and the automaker recently inked an agreement to air all 10 races on the Versus cable TV network.

“The Viper ACR-X is designed and built specifically for the track,” Ralph Gilles, president of the Dodge brand, said in a prepared statement. “With Versus on board, fans will have the opportunity to see our untamed road-racing machine compete on five of the best road courses in the country.”

The VCS kicks off its inaugural season at Virginia International Raceway this weekend. Versus plans on airing the first race at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, and the second race at 2:30 p.m EST on Sunday. The third and fourth races will be held at Hallet Raceway in Jennings, Oklahoma, on August 14 and 15. Races five and six will be held at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, on September 11 and 12, while races seven and eight at Miller Motorsports Park in Toole, Utah on October 2 and 3. The last two events of the 2010 season will be held at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada, on October 23 and 24. All ten events will be televised, each condensed into a 30-minute program.
