Diplomatic Decision: Fiat Ends Sales to Iran

Fiat has announced it is ending business ties with Iran, after being accused of “violating human rights” by certain advocacy groups.

Fiat explained the reason for the cutoff in a press release, saying it “supports the international efforts for a diplomatic solution of the issues relating to…Iran.” Iran has been under fire for its disputed nuclear program, and advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) has been urging Fiat to cut off business dealings with Iran for quite some time. The group even reached out to former Fiat spokeswoman Jennifer Lopez, urging her to drop her endorsement deal with the automaker.

Fiat reportedly supplied complete knock down car kits to one of Iran’s largest car companies, though Fiat said “sales to Iran-based entities during past years by Fiat’s subsidiaries were totally immaterial in a quantitative and qualitative sense and any concerned products were sold for commercial and civilian use only.”
