Cost of Carbon: Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Could Reach Production, Cost $2.8 Million

Lamborghini wowed us all at last year’s Paris Auto Show with the Sesto Elemento concept and not surprisingly, there have been plenty of rumors swirling around the ultra-light and fast concept. Less than a year later, it appears that the Sesto Elemento is “in the advance stages of its development,” according to inside sources close to Autocar. Oh, and it could cost close to $3 million a pop.

Statements like that usually indicate that the car is destined for production, but Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann is only willing to admit that there’s a 50/50 chance the automaker will produce the Sesto Elemento. We could only assume that his hesitation is due to the fact that this would be Lamborghini’s most advanced and expensive vehicle to date.

The Sesto Elemento is a showcase of advanced carbon fiber technology and materials, much of which was developed at the automaker’s Advanced Composite Research Center in Sant’Agata. Lamborghini claims that the generous use composite materials—from the carbon fiber monocoque body shell to the suspension parts made of forged carbon fiber—will keep the Sesto Elemento’s weight down to around a feathery 2,200 pounds. With a combination of low weight and a powertrain sourced from the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, the Sesto Elemento is estimated to have a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds.

Achieving that performance, however, comes at an expense; its reported that the cabin will be stripped down, which means the supercar will likely only see track use. Another expense is the cost of entry, which has now been pushed up to a staggering 2 million euros ($2.9 million) with an estimated production run of 20 units.
