Mercedes-Benz is looking to continue its hybrid offensive in the U.S. beyond its full-size S400 Hybrid, and will be doing so with the new 2013 E400 Hybrid.
The E-Class hybrid uses the same powertrain setup as its S-Class big brother: the car starts with a traditional gas-powered 3.5-liter V-6 that is supplemented by an electric motor. Here, overall power output is greater than the 295 hp in the S400 — the V-6 in the E400 produces 306 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, and the electric motor creates an additional 27 hp and 184 lb-ft.
What Mercedes is most proud of with the E400 Hybrid is the fact that it says the car will achieve 24 mpg in in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, for a combined fuel economy of 27 mpg on the U.S. testing cycle. While that may be off by one mpg on the highway when compared to the diesel-powered E350 BlueTec, the hybrid exceeds that car’s city mileage by three mpg and has almost 100 more horsepower. In fact, the E400’s power numbers best those of the gas-only-powered E350 sedan, which is rated at 302 hp and 273 lb-ft.
Also making its debut at the Detroit auto show today is the diesel-powered E300 BlueTec Hybrid. Sadly, Mercedes has no plans to bring that car here. It uses a similar setup to the E400, but with a 204-hp four-cylinder diesel engine in place of the V-6.
The E400 Hybrid is, however, coming to the States. Mercedes says that it will go on sale here in the second half of this year, though pricing for the car has yet to be announced.
