Yes, Acura’s sold small, entry-level luxury vehicles in North America before. In fact, the TSX was originally launched in our market to fulfill that role. So why, exactly, is the automaker preparing to add the all-new 2013 ILX to its lineup?
Autonomy, for one. Designed and developed here in North America, the ILX can be completely crafted in order to meet the tastes and needs of customers in both the U.S. in Canada. Previous offerings, including the present TSX, have largely been shaped by the wishes of customers in other markets — unsurprising, really, considering the TSX is little more than the European-market Honda Accord. Some company officials suggest they think the second-generation TSX has grown a bit too big and too expensive for it to serve as a true entry point to the Acura brand, especially for the up-and-coming millennial generation.
For now, Acura’s planning only a single body style — a four-door sedan — but has three different powertrain options available. Base cars will be fitted with a 2.0-liter I-4 and a five-speed automatic transmission. For those who want a bit more pep, the 2.4-liter I-4 — cribbed from the Civic Si and the larger TSX sedan — will be offered in partnership with a six-speed manual transmission. A hybrid model — Acura’s first — will use the Civic Hybrid’s 1.5-liter I-4 and integrated motor assist, but officials hint the system may be tuned a bit more for performance than fuel economy.
