The unusual DeltaWing race car hit the track twice in 2012, and was forced off the track at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by a Toyota TS030 Hybrid. Many thought after its troubled first season, the DeltaWing would be relegated to a racing museum. But it looks like the unorthodox race car will live to race again, this time with a different engine, and a different body, according to a report from Speed.
One of the backers of the original Nissan-powered DeltaWing effort, Panoz is reportedly developing a new Mazda MZ-R based engine with a billet block, direct-injection and twin turbos producing approximately 345 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. In addition to being more powerful than the previous Nissan engine, the engine is reportedly 15 lb lighter as well.
The car with the new Mazda engine will reportedly debut at this year’s Sebring race in the current open-top bodystyle, but an enclosed coupe DeltaWing body will be used for races after Sebring. In addition to the new engine and new body, the car will be competing in the P1 category for 2013, a change to a faster, more competitive class than the 2012 car’s P1 classification.
The new enclosed coupe body style with the new Mazda-based engine will reportedly see track action at the May 11 ALMS race at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway.
