Daimler Looks for Additional Tesla Collaboration Opportunities

When you’re hot, you’re hot, and there’s no denying Tesla, the California-based electric auto maker falls into that category, and we’re not just talking about the two recent vehicle fires in Washington state and Mexico. It seems Tesla benefactor Daimler is looking for more ways to work together with the company, beyond collaboration on the battery and powertrain on the Smart ED and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz B-Class electric, according to Reuters. Some of the Model S‘ interior switchgear is sourced from Daimler or affiliated suppliers.

According to the report, Bodo Uebber, Daimler’s chief financial officer ordered his team to look for other opportunities to work together with Tesla, beyond just supplying battery packs and electric powertrains for the Smart ED and upcoming Mercedes B-class SUV. Daimler also supplied some of the switchgear and interior controls for the Model S sedan. How the cooperation will manifest itself is unknown, but interest in electric vehicles and renewable energy is at a high point in Germany, with the nation the number one producer of distributed s(i.e. rooftop) solar power in the world. Tesla has also singled out Germany as part of the expansion of its Supercharger quick-charging network in Europe, having kicked off the initiative in electric-friendly Norway.
