Custom Toyota Tundra Gets Wide and Bright for Hot Rod Power Tour

Support vehicles don't have to be boring

The annual 2016 Hot Rod Power Tour was dominated by American muscle, but there was one oddball in last week’s event. There among the classic Chevys and Fords was a bright yellow Toyota Tundra, custom-built with a wide body kit and a TRD PRO front and rear end.

TV personality Rutledge Wood entered a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro for the Hot Rod Power Tour, and he built the wild Tundra as a support vehicle. Creating the truck was much more than a wheel swap and coat of yellow paint.

The project is based on a 2008 Toyota Tundra regular cab, short-bed truck and the first step was swapping in a 2016 Tundra TRD PRO front fascia and bed. For the wide body look, Rutledge turned to Tra Kyoto, the Japan-based customizers better known for the Rocket Bunny kits more commonly found on Toyobarus and GT-Rs. The kit is just wide enough for the 20-inch Fuel wheels that are a foot wide. This truck likely won’t see any mud action, so those aggressive-looking General Tire Grabbers are mostly for show. The bright wrap comes from 3M in a shade called Gloss Lemon Sting, while a TRD supercharger is providing extra boost under the hood.

Mic. Drop.

Rutledge documented the build on his Instagram page where he said the truck “might be my favorite thing I’ve built yet!” He’ll most likely show off the truck more in the future, but in the meantime, look for in the Hot Rod Power Tour coverage from our friends at Hot Rod.
