Almost every major luxury brand on the planet has introduced or announced the offering of an SUV model within the next two years. One of the few holdouts has been Jaguar. Even before the recent corporate pair-up between Jaguar and Land Rover, the two brands shared showroom space, and there was an implicit, but unspoken agreement that Land Rover would make SUVs, and Jaguar would be cars only. But with crossovers being the hottest segment in almost every size and price class worldwide, and especially among luxury models, the lure of sales volume proved too irresistible to the feline fleet.
Rumors of a Jaguar crossover are nothing new, having been on a low simmer for at least a year. But the C-X17’s significance goes beyond simply being Jaguar’s first SUV. It also serves as the debut of Jaguar’s new modular aluminum architecture, which will reportedly underpin many if not most of Jaguar’s next-generation models.
The shock of any brand, however rarefied or exclusive, offering and SUV, is long gone, with such blueblood brands as Lamborghini, Bentley, Maserati, all introducing or announcing new SUV models in the next two years. But after having driven some dynamically outstanding new crossovers lately, we’re no longer of the mind that the offering of an SUV means that a brand’s inherent dynamic character is discarded in the process.
